A filter bag must be supported and seated at the housing opening; placing the bag inside the vessel is not the whole installation check. A bag that does not match the housing, basket or hold-down arrangement may allow bypass, uneven loading or local wear. Use the instructions for the actual housing and bag model when inspecting or replacing an element.
Treat symptoms as clues, then confirm the cause
Particles appearing downstream may be associated with a bag that is not seated, debris on a sealing surface, a mismatched collar or bag size, a damaged bag, or a contaminated sample. Repeated wear in the same location can point to a sharp edge, distortion, folds or contact with the basket. These observations are clues; confirm the cause using operating records and an inspection under the site’s safe-work procedure.
Check the bag, basket and sealing arrangement
Before inspection, stop and isolate the equipment and confirm it is in the safe state required by the site procedure and housing manual. Check that the bag length and collar style match the housing and basket. Confirm the bag body is fully supported, the collar sits evenly on the intended rim or locating feature, and the hold-down component is the correct one for that design. Inspect the sealing surfaces for residue, scratches or damage.
Eaton’s POLYLINE housing instructions, for example, describe placing the bag fully into the basket, seating its collar on the basket rim and checking clean, undamaged sealing surfaces. That sequence is specific to the covered housing; follow the manual for the equipment at your site. Do not force a cover closed or use an unsuitable tool to compensate for a mismatch.
For a multi-bag housing, check each bag and record its position. When changing supplier or batch, compare dimensions, construction, material and the rating basis with the specified element. Keep the replacement date and element identification for traceability.
Make an initial check after replacement
Close and restart the housing using the approved procedure for the installed equipment. From a safe position, observe for leakage, unexpected flow or pressure changes, and downstream particle results using a consistent sample point and method. Record the bag model and batch. If the issue returns, inspect for collar bypass, damage, fit and changes in operating conditions before concluding that a finer rating is needed.
If the housing needs to be opened again, isolate and depressurize it using the site’s approved method first. Do not open or adjust a pressurized housing.
