The choice between a single-bag and multi-bag housing depends on the operating duty and the way the site can maintain it. Flow rate matters, but so do particle loading, available floor and service space, the permitted shutdown window, the number of bags to handle and how the liquid is distributed across the media.
A multi-bag housing holds several bags in one vessel. That arrangement can provide more total media area, depending on the selected bag size and design. It does not establish a guaranteed flow rate, pressure loss or service life: those values need to be confirmed for the proposed housing, bags and liquid.
Start with the service routine
A single-bag housing may suit an application where one bag can meet the specified duty and the site can schedule a change-out. Its footprint and consumables may be straightforward, but verify that its available area and permitted operating conditions suit the peak flow and particle load.
A multi-bag arrangement may be useful when several bags are intended to operate in parallel. The maintenance team must be able to open the vessel, access each bag, remove and reinstall the support baskets, and handle the cover safely. Check the lifting arrangement, overhead clearance, pipework, aisle and space for removed bags before choosing a larger vessel.
Neither the number of bags nor nominal flow alone confirms actual capacity. Ask the supplier to explain the design flow assumptions, media area, expected clean pressure loss and limits for the selected configuration.
Prepare these six items before requesting a quotation
- Liquid name, composition or available analysis, temperature and viscosity.
- Normal and peak flow, with continuous or intermittent operation.
- Main particle sources, expected loading and filtration objective.
- Operating pressure, permitted pressure loss and pump conditions.
- Available shutdown time, staffing and the expected bag change procedure.
- Installation footprint, cover-opening clearance, lifting access and pipe direction.
If replacing an existing filter, include its nameplate, bag dimensions, housing arrangement and maintenance history. A photograph of the installation can help identify access constraints, but it does not replace confirmation of the operating conditions.
Compare maintenance across the full operating cycle
Compare both options against the same process assumptions. Include the housing, bags per change, spare stock, expected replacement interval as confirmed for the application, labor, product retained in the vessel and production downtime. A lower initial equipment price may not reflect the time required to isolate, drain, open, clean and restart the system.
For a multi-bag housing, confirm whether operators can safely reach every bag and remove each basket without obstruction. For a single-bag housing, verify that the bag area and operating limits are suitable for the actual duty. A larger bag count may affect vessel size and service access, so it should be evaluated with a drawing and the site layout.
Eaton’s technical overview of bag filtration discusses media capacity, filter area and maintenance considerations as parts of sizing. These considerations support a duty-based comparison; the supplier must still calculate the performance of the particular equipment and media offered.
Confirm the specification and safe change-out procedure
Record the agreed housing model, materials, bag size and rating definition, design and operating conditions, connections, accessories and acceptance method in the quotation or technical agreement. Request drawings and product data where needed to check the fit with the existing line.
Before opening any filter, follow the equipment manual and site procedure to isolate, depressurize and drain the vessel. Confirm the cover is safe to release and use the designated lifting or opening method. The required procedure depends on the installed equipment and process.
