What Does a Bag Filter Basket Do? Bag Support and Sealing Checks

Learn how a bag filter basket supports the bag, what to inspect during service and how to check fit with the housing and seal.

Generic perforated filter basket and water sample bottles in an industrial filtration setting

A bag filter basket supports the filter bag inside the housing; it is not the filter media and does not set the filtration rating. The basket helps the bag keep its intended shape under operating conditions. For a reliable installation, check that the basket, bag, collar and housing are designed to fit together, then inspect the basket for damage or blockage during service.

How the basket supports the filter bag

The filter bag sits inside a perforated support basket. The basket helps carry the load placed on the bag during filtration. Eaton’s housing manual describes the restrainer basket as the support that allows a filter bag to withstand the differential pressure encountered in operation. The exact limits and installation details depend on the housing and consumable selected.

The bag must also seat and seal correctly at the housing opening. A bag that is the wrong size, not fully inserted, or incompatible with the hold-down or sealing arrangement may be poorly supported or allow liquid to bypass the intended media path. A micron label alone does not confirm mechanical fit.

Before ordering a replacement, compare the housing model, basket dimensions, bag length and diameter, collar style, and any hold-down or adapter components. If the model is unknown, photos of the installed basket, housing interior and used bag can help identify what needs to be checked against the equipment documents.

What to inspect on the basket

During a planned service inspection, look for a bent or distorted body, damaged joints, sharp edges or projections that could snag the bag, and residue blocking the perforations. Check the seating area and the surfaces that locate the basket in the housing. Use cleaning methods and materials compatible with the process liquid and housing; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If bags repeatedly tear at the same location, inspect the corresponding contact point on the basket and review installation, flow conditions and the bag specification. A basket in good condition does not by itself guarantee suitable flow, media life or filtration performance. Consider the full operating duty, including flow, particle loading, effective media area and the condition of the seals.

Match the basket, bag and housing as a set

Do not modify a basket or substitute a component based only on a visual resemblance. Confirm compatibility with the equipment documentation or the responsible supplier before putting the housing back into service.
