Particles downstream of a bag filter do not automatically mean that the filtration rating is too coarse. First confirm where the particles are entering the process, then check the sample, bag fit, media condition, sealing surfaces and operating conditions. Before opening any filter housing, stop the pump, isolate the vessel, release pressure and drain it according to the equipment instructions. Never open a pressurized housing.
A bag filter retains particles that match the construction and rating of the installed media. A mismatched bag, an unseated collar, a damaged basket or a change in flow and solids loading can all contribute to unexpected results. Identifying the source before changing the media can prevent unnecessary trial and error.
Five checks to make
| Check | Possible cause | How to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Sample point and container | A dirty container, downstream piping or a storage tank may be adding particles | Take separate upstream and downstream samples in clean containers; record the time and whether the issue repeats |
| Bag size, media and rating | The length, collar, material or rating may not match the housing or process | Compare the bag label and purchase details with the housing basket and process requirement |
| Bag seating and basket support | The bag may not be fully seated, or the basket may be deformed | After isolation and depressurization, inspect the bag position, collar or hold-down arrangement and basket |
| Bag integrity and sealing | A torn bag, contaminated sealing surface or worn seal can create a bypass path | Record the tear location and check the media lot, process compatibility and sealing condition |
| Operating conditions | Higher flow, a changing solids load or frequent starts and stops can affect operation | Compare flow, inlet and outlet pressure readings, run time and recent process changes |
Follow the evidence instead of guessing at a finer rating
If upstream and downstream samples look similar, and particles appear farther downstream, inspect piping, tanks and equipment after the filter. If particles are consistently present at the filter outlet, shut the system down safely and check whether the bag is intact, properly seated and compatible with the basket. If the bag is damaged, review the liquid, temperature, flow and media compatibility before choosing a replacement.
If bags block quickly or pressure readings change, review the incoming solids load and actual flow as well. A finer rating may increase media loading. It may not solve a problem caused by a high solids load, poor seating, a damaged seal or an incorrectly fitted bag. Follow the equipment manual and process requirements for operating limits; there is no single changeout threshold that applies to every installation.
Information that helps diagnose the issue
When asking for technical help, provide the filter housing model, bag size and rating, photos of the bag and basket, upstream and downstream sample observations, flow rate, operating pressure and temperature, liquid name and any recent process changes. If available, include the bag label and the relevant maintenance record.
Guangxiangyu Tech supplies single-bag, multi-bag and quick-opening filter housings, compatible filter bags and cartridge filtration products. Product suitability depends on the liquid, solids and operating conditions. The observation “particles are present at the outlet” alone is not enough to specify a replacement. Review our bag filter housing information, filter bag options and installation and maintenance guide.
Frequently asked questions
Will a finer bag always produce cleaner liquid? No. The rating needs to match the particle target and process. A finer media may block sooner, and the meaning of a rating should be confirmed with the supplier.
Can I open the housing while it is running to inspect the bag? No. Stop and isolate the system, release pressure and confirm the vessel is safe to open before inspection. Follow the equipment instructions and site safety procedures.
