Why Filter Bags Tear or Bypass: Troubleshoot Installation, Support and Operating Conditions

Investigate filter bag damage and downstream particles by checking bag fit, sealing, basket support, process conditions and liquid compatibility.

Industrial filtration equipment and pipework in a generic water treatment setting

A torn bag, a displaced bag collar and particles found downstream can have different causes. Check the bag, seal, support basket, housing and operating record together before changing to a finer rating. Shut down, isolate, depressurize and drain the equipment in accordance with its manual and site procedure before inspection.

Identify what happened

“Bag failure” may describe a visible tear, a bag pulled out of its retaining position, or particles that passed into the outlet. Record which symptom is present. Photograph the complete bag, its collar and seams, the basket and the housing seal. Note where retained solids are concentrated and whether the issue appeared after a start-up, flow change, maintenance activity or change in feed.

Particles downstream do not, by themselves, prove the bag has torn. A poorly seated collar, damaged seal or bypass around the media can produce a similar result. Sampling practices, a changed feed, or a rating that does not match the required particle-control objective should also be considered.

Check installation, fit and support

Confirm that the bag dimensions and collar design match the housing model. Check whether the bag is fully inserted into the support basket and its sealing ring is seated as specified by the manufacturer. Inspect the basket for deformation, sharp edges, corrosion or damage that could contact the bag. Look for folds, pinched fabric or local marks that may point to an installation or support problem.

Do not force a bag into place with an unsuitable tool or pull it by the fabric. Follow the bag and housing instructions for the retaining ring, hold-down device and cover closure. Check the seal and the fit of the housing parts at the same time; a sound bag cannot prevent bypass if the sealing arrangement is incorrect.

Review the operating conditions and media

Compare the event with the specified flow, pressure and temperature conditions. A sudden change in flow, pump start-up or higher particle loading can change the forces and solids burden experienced by the bag. Check the filter’s operating record and consult the housing supplier if the measured conditions are outside the documented limits.

Confirm that the bag material is suitable for the actual liquid, concentration, temperature and cleaning chemicals. Softening, swelling, brittleness, discoloration or unusual fibre release can justify preserving the used bag and asking the supplier to review the material data. Do not return a visibly damaged or suspect bag to service.

Downstream particles without a visible tearSeal bypass, sample method, feed change and rating definition
Sudden change after process adjustmentFlow, pump operation, pressure record and particle loading

These are investigation prompts, not a diagnosis. Confirm the cause with the equipment documentation and a site inspection.

Keep a useful failure record

For each event, log the housing and bag model, bag age, processed volume if available, flow and pressure conditions, feed changes, photographs and maintenance actions. Record what was found after opening the housing and whether downstream sampling was repeated under a consistent method. This makes it easier to distinguish a recurring installation issue from a change in the incoming liquid or process.

Before opening the housing, follow the installed equipment’s instructions for shutdown and safe release of pressure. See our guide to quick-opening filter maintenance for service planning considerations.

Bag filter products and inquiries

Shenzhen Guangxiangyu Technology Co., Ltd. supplies single-bag, multi-bag and quick-opening bag filter housings and compatible filter bags. For troubleshooting, send the housing and bag model, photographs, operating readings and liquid conditions to Liu Nan, Sales Manager, at LiuNan2553@gmail.com. The cause should be confirmed against the actual equipment and operating conditions.
