Filter Bag or Cartridge for a Particle-Laden Liquid? Compare the Change-Out Method

Compare bag and cartridge filter formats by the filtration objective, process conditions, housing fit, consumables and maintenance plan.

Generic industrial filter housing, filter bag and cartridge elements displayed together

Both filter bags and cartridges can be used for liquids containing particles, but neither format is the right answer for every process. Compare the filtration objective, particle load, media construction, flow, available housing, service access and downstream requirements. Do not assume that every bag is coarse, every cartridge is fine, or identical micron numbers mean equivalent performance.

Compare how each format is installed and serviced

A bag filter housing typically supports the bag in a basket. During service, the housing is opened according to its instructions and the used bag is removed and replaced or inspected. A cartridge filter uses elements matched to the housing length, connection, number of elements and sealing arrangement. Its replacement procedure depends on the specific housing and cartridge design.

For either format, plan for safe shutdown, isolation, pressure release, drainage and access for removing the consumable. Consider spare stock, labor, downtime and how the used media will be handled. Confirm the exact operating and replacement limits in the documents for the proposed equipment.

Match the media to the liquid and target

Describe the particle source, size distribution, loading and downstream equipment that needs protection. Compare the specific media type and its documented retention rating, test method and efficiency. A rating number alone does not establish how two products will perform in the process liquid.

Flow, viscosity, temperature, chemistry and filter area can affect the operating conditions and service interval. Check that the bag or cartridge materials, seals and housing are compatible with the liquid and cleaning method. If the process has a required particle limit, ask the system owner or downstream equipment supplier to define its test method and acceptance criterion.

Comparison itemQuestions for each proposed format
Filtration objectiveWhich particles need to be retained and what downstream requirement applies?
Rating evidenceWhat does the stated micron rating mean and which test supports it?
Media constructionWhat material, area and sealing arrangement are included?
Housing fitAre dimensions, connections and support components compatible?
Operating dutyWhat flow, pressure, temperature and liquid properties were assumed?
MaintenanceHow is the element changed, and what access, time and waste handling are required?
VerificationWhich sample point and test method will be used to compare results?

Compare proposals under the same conditions

Give both suppliers the same process information and ask them to state their assumptions. Compare the equipment cost together with consumable use, service access, downtime, disposal and the evidence offered for the filtration objective. If practical, evaluate representative liquid under controlled, comparable conditions, using the same sampling points and test method.

The result of one test should be interpreted alongside process changes and operating records. Confirm that the rating definitions are comparable before drawing a conclusion from a micron value. For more on those terms, see our guide to nominal and absolute bag ratings.

When to get an application review

Ask for a detailed review when the liquid is hot, corrosive, viscous, contains deformable or fibrous particles, or must run continuously. If continuous operation is required, assess the system arrangement and maintenance plan; do not assume that a bag or cartridge can be changed safely while the housing is operating.

Bag and cartridge filter products

Shenzhen Guangxiangyu Technology Co., Ltd. supplies stainless steel bag filter housings, precision filter housings, compatible bags, PP melt-blown cartridges and electroplating cotton-core cartridges. Share the process liquid, flow, pressure, temperature, target particles and maintenance requirements to discuss a configuration against its specific product data. Performance and service life should be confirmed for the application.

Technical references

Donaldson liquid bag filters and Donaldson liquid cartridge filters show the range of formats and media available from that supplier. Compare the technical data for the particular product models under consideration; product ranges from one manufacturer do not define a universal bag-versus-cartridge rule.
