If a filter housing is leaking at a seal, first control the process risk and follow the site procedure to shut down, isolate, depressurize and drain the equipment. Do not try to tighten a closure or open a housing while it is pressurized or while the liquid’s temperature and hazards are unknown.
The correct repair depends on where the leak originates and on the housing design. A cover gasket, flange, threaded connection or other joint may require different checks. Repeatedly tightening a fastener without identifying the leak source can hide damage or create another problem.
1. Stop and confirm a safe condition
Follow the site’s operating procedure to stop the relevant pump or equipment and isolate any source that could continue feeding the housing. Use the designated pressure-release and drain path, and collect the liquid according to site requirements. For hot, corrosive, flammable or otherwise hazardous liquids, apply the required protective equipment, monitoring and waste-handling steps.
The installed equipment manual and the site safety procedure determine how to verify that the housing is safe to inspect. Eaton’s bag filter housing manual states that work should not be performed before shutdown and pressure release, and warns against opening under pressure. That manual covers specific designs; use the instructions for the equipment installed at your site.
2. Record the leak and operating conditions
After the safe condition has been confirmed, record the leak location, when it appeared, operating pressure and temperature, liquid identity, and the time since the last opening or service. A photograph can help document the leak location and the condition of the surrounding area.
Inspect the seal only when permitted by the procedure. Look for an incorrect size or material, aging, twisting, cuts, flattening, trapped particles or evidence of uneven contact. Check the sealing groove and mating surface for scratches, deposits, corrosion or deformation. If the leak is at a flange or threaded connection, assess that joint according to its design rather than treating it as a cover gasket problem.
3. Confirm the assembly before returning to service
Check that the cover closure, fasteners and retaining components are complete and that the filter bag or cartridge is installed in a way that allows the housing to close correctly. If the process liquid, temperature, seal material or consumable has changed, review compatibility and dimensions against the equipment documents.
Replace a seal only with a confirmed compatible specification. Clean contact surfaces and reassemble using the manufacturer’s sequence. Tightening order, torque, lubrication and gasket treatment depend on the specific equipment; do not apply one value or method to every filter housing.
Once reassembled, restore operation according to the site procedure and equipment instructions. Observe the joint from a safe position and record the result. If the same point leaks again, or if the shell, flange or sealing surface is visibly damaged, stop and have the responsible equipment specialist assess it rather than repeatedly adding force.
4. Keep a useful service record
Log the equipment model, leak location, liquid and temperature, pressure readings, seal specification, recent maintenance and replacement parts. Preserve photographs and note the actions taken. This record can help distinguish a damaged surface or component from a fit, material or operating-condition issue.
